UFC: Jon Jones Is Looking To Dodge Alexander Gustafsson Rematch
UFC light heavyweight Champion Jon Jones and UFC President Dana White are at an impasse over Jones's next title match. White has told UFC.com that Jones has so far refused to sign on to take part in a rematch with number one contender Alexander Gustaffson. That match had been pencilled in for August 30th, in what would be the biggest UFC rematch of the year. Jones won the previous battle last September, but only after a close 5 round unanimous decision, with many calling it the best UFC fight of all time. Obviously Dana White wants to capitalise and do the match again, it's a pay per view headliner we all want to see. Why doesn't Jones want to commit to the fight? Perhaps due to the fact he came so close to losing the first time around, he isn't in a rush to put his belt on the line against Gustaffson for a second time. White revealed that the hold up isn't related to Jones bargaining for a new contract, he still has five fights left on his current deal. He simply doesn't want to face Gustaffson and is instead pushing to face Daniel Corimer. In UFC rankings Gustaffson is considered the number one contender, with Corimer (who is in fact unbeaten in his career) behind him. It's clear that the bigger money is in Jones vs Gustaffson 2, it's a match which has a real story behind it stemming from the last match. Jones shirking the fight is just the latest example of him further sullying his diminished character reputation. He might be the biggest star of the company, but he is also their biggest ego it seems. "So, what we're doing right now is trying to get him to sign the bout agreement for Gustafsson," White states, "He doesn't want to fight Gustafsson. (UFC co-owner) Lorenzo (Fertitta) and I have a meeting with Jones on Thursday to get him to sign the bout agreement and he's asking to fight Cormier instead."
