World Cup 2014: 25 Most Memorable Moments
17. Neuer: Sweeper Keeper
Over time football inevitably changes, bringing development of new positions and roles: we've seen it with the full backs and now it seems it's happening with the goalkeeper. We had seen already glimpses of the sweeper keeper with Hugo Lloris in the Premier League and Manuel Neuer in the Champions League, but never before this World Cup has it been such a prominent feature in the game.
In their second round match, Germany took on Algeria and set-up with a high defensive line that clearly lacked pace. Algeria had the likes of Slimani and Soudani that caused them serious problems, but thanks to Neuers quickness of his line he frequently foiled the Africans attacks.
An incredible 36% of the German keepers touches were outside of his penalty area and his heat mat was similar to that of a central defender. We may look back at this performance in years to come and see that this was the defining moment of the sweeper keeper.
16. Ochoa's Superb Saves
From one goalkeeping performance to another: in the case of Guillermo Ochoa it was a much more traditional goalkeeping display, though it was no less impressive.
Ochoa had a tournament to remember and his best moment came when Mexico played Brazil, as the keeper pulled of a string of impressive saves as the hosts couldnt find a way past. One save in particular - a fantastic stop from Neymars header - led to comparisons with the iconic Gordon Banks save from Pele in the 1970 World Cup.
After spending the last three seasons at recently relegated French side, Ajaccio, the Mexican is now a free agent and linked with a move to some of the top clubs in Europe.
