4. AC Milan v Inter Milan
The
Derby della Madonnina or The Milan Derby is the biggest of all footballing rivalries in Italy and, indeed, the world. Not only are these two clubs based in the same city they share the same stadium! The San Siro has been the home ground of both AC Milan and Inter Milan since 1947 and has seen some of the most passionate derby matches in European football. The emergence of F.C. Internazionale came in 1908 after a split that was caused by the signing of several foreign players. It has played out to be of benefit to neutral supporters as these derby games have often thrilled football fans. As far as success goes it is hard to split the two. AC have won 29 domestic trophies in Italy whilst Inter have won 30. These two clubs have been the best performed teams in the Serie A since its inception and it has only been in recent campaigns where the superiority over the rest has diminished. However, if you were to ask any AC Milan fan whether their beloved
Rossoneri was more successful than their rivals they will allude you to the five European Cup victories they have; Inter have only the two. Irrespective of where the two teams are standing in the league table this fixture will always be highly contested. The current players are aware of the history and the notion of "never losing at home" is always at a high during this particular match.
