Sunderland surprised everyone with the signing of Asamoah Gyan in 2010, who starred in Ghana's impressive World Cup push that year, for a club record fee.

The then 24-year old hit the ground running and took no time to make an impression. Gyan's red-hot form saw him race to 10 goals in all competitions by February, but he fizzled out soon after and then succumbed to an injury that ruled him out of Sunderland's home stretch of the campaign.

After appearing thrice in the following season, the Ghanian marksman was loaned out to Abu Dhabi-side Al Ain, where he started firing again.

Martin O'Neill, who took charge of Sunderland in December 2011, contemplated on bringing the striker back to the Stadium of Light, but Gyan's impressive run convinced the UAE outfit to sign him permanently.
