9. Federico Macheda Breaks Liverpool Hearts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WT8gIJ5_354 The 2008/09 season was exciting from start to finish, and Rafa Benitez's Liverpool side were the ones challenging United for the title all season long. Having seemingly given Ferguson's team an unassailable lead at the top at one point, the Reds' memorable 4-1 victory at Old Trafford, coupled with United's loss at Fulham a week later, suddenly meant the Merseyside club had all the momentum. Failure to beat Aston Villa in April 2009 could prove fatal for Ferguson and his side. Cristiano Ronaldo, well on his way to becoming a footballing superstar by this point, had fired the hosts into an early lead with a trademark free-kick, only for John Carew and Gabriel Agbonlahor to turn the game on its head and stun the home faithful. With time running out, it was looking like a huge turning point in the season, but Ronaldo made it 2-2 after 80 minutes to set up a frantic finale. Deep into stoppage-time, a hero was born. 17-year-old substitute Federico Macheda, who was a relative unknown, turned brilliantly in the box before curling a majestic effort past Brad Friedel. Old Trafford went absolutely bezerk, and there was a definite feeling that it was the goal that would win United the title. That proved correct, and although Liverpool kept fighting until the end, the momentum boost that goal gave United was enormous.
