As Real Madrid and their superstars lifted the Champions League trophy for a second successive season in Cardiff in May, they still have a long way to go before even contemplating matching the Madrid boys of old.

In the 1950s, Los Blancos enjoyed a stranglehold over European football in a way that is unlikely to ever be repeated. With a team that starred Puskas at the forefront, Madrid lifted an extraordinary five European Cups in a row between 1955-60.

The modern era Madrid side successfully defending the cup this year was the first time any team has done so in the Champions League. Whether they can make it three in a row with the news that Cristiano Ronaldo is seeking an exit remains to be seen, but what is probable is that no team will ever match the five in a row record set by the boys from the '50s.
