Back in the summer of 2013, there was much speculation over the future of Suarez at Anfield. The brilliant Uruguayan looked set to leave the club, and Rodgers saw Costa as the ideal replacement. In August of that year, Liverpool had a £21m bid for the Brazilian-turned-Spaniard rejected by Atletico Madrid, even though there were some who believed it had triggered a release clause in his contract. Although Suarez ended up staying, Costa would have been signed anyway, and what a signing he would have proved to be. The feisty striker scored 36 goals in 52 games last season, firing Diego Simeone's side to La Liga glory and a Champions League final, before joining Chelsea this summer. He has got off to a sensational start at Stamford Bridge, scoring 10 in his first 12 games, one of which was the winner against, you guessed it, Liverpool. Although there were some at the time who weren't sure whether Costa's controversial character was worth the risk, there can be no doubting that Liverpool missed out on a truly world-class striker last year.
