10 Midfielders That Will Be In Roy Hodgson's Provisional England Squad (And 1 That Won't)

1. Jack Wilshire - Arsenal

Caps: 15 Goals: 0 Wilshere may be a surprising omission from the squad given that he has featured so regularly in the England set up over the past couple of years. However, the Arsenal man is currently struggling to overcome a broken foot sustained on Three Lions' duty in early March and with only four games left this season and an unspecified return date, he has very little time left to prove both his form and fitness to Roy Hodgson. The Gunners' midfielder had struggled for form even before his injury and whilst there can be no doubt he is a talented player, there may simply not be enough time for him to make a convincing case to the manager that he deserves to go ahead of other players in his position. England have taken injured players to the World Cup before, Beckham and Rooney are prime examples, but they have been talismanic players on whom much of the nation's hopes of rested. There is unlikely to be the same pressure on Hodgson to take Wilshire and with all due respect to the Arsenal man, he is not in the same class as the two players mentioned above. If Wilshire can stay fit and recapture the form that made him such an exciting England prospect when he first burst on to the international scene then he will be an important player for the national team for years to come. Unfortunately, he looks set to miss out this time round. What do you think? Use the comment box below to name midfielders you'd like to see taken to the World Cup.Stats courtesy of FA
