10 Most Legendary Substitutes In Football History

1. Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) Vs Wolfsburg

Polish hitman Robert Lewandowski came on as a substitute off the bench at half-time with Bayern Munich trailing 1-0 to Wolfsburg and scored five goals, as one of the most incredible super-sub performances ever!

The Poland center-forward set new world records for the most goals scored by a substitute in the Bundesliga (five), the fastest Bundesliga hat-trick (three minutes and 22 seconds), the fastest four goals in a Bundesliga match (five minutes and 42 seconds) and the fastest five goals in a Bundesliga match (eight minutes and 59 seconds).

The Bayern Munich Striker (Robert Lewandowski) told Sky:

"I just wanted to shoot, I didn't really think what will happen afterwards. Having been one down, we knew that we must improve and score twice at least. But five goals, that's incredible."

Pep Guardiola said after the match:

"I don't understand this, five goals! I have never in my life witnessed something like this whether as a player or a coach.”

The image of Guardiola smiling with his head in his hands will be remembered for many years, but the goalscoring records and outright ruthlessness of Robert Lewandowski will be remembered forever, not only because of the magnitude of what he achieved but also because of the ease with which he scored the five goals.

Lewandowski is the first player to score five goals in a Bundesliga match since Michael Tonnies in 1991, and only the 14th player to ever do it in the league. No Bayern player had scored five since Dieter Hoeness in 1984. He is also the only substitute to score at least five goals in a Bundesliga match. However, he was one short of the Bundesliga record for most goals in a match, set at six by Dieter Muller in 1977.

One of the best strikers of his generation, this was certainly a once-in-a-lifetime performance.
