Tony Pulis made Rory Delap's penchant for piercing, bullet-like throw-ins a defining feature of his Stoke side's attack after earning promotion to the Premier League in 2008.

Within a couple of years, the Republic of Ireland international had become so famed for causing panic in the opposing team's penalty area that some of his hosts took the precaution of pushing their advertising hoarding a few yards closer to the pitch in order to impede his run up.

A javelin competitor in his youth, every-man Delap made the most of the ability he had with his hands, without which it would perhaps have been difficult to sustain a career in England's top flight, where he managed some 300-plus appearances before retiring four years ago.
