If there is one player whose exit remains a tough topic to talk about for Liverpool fans across the globe, it's Alonso's. The brilliant Spaniard, who incidentally is one of the coolest men currently walking planet earth, was a majestic player for the Reds for five years, oozing class in midfield, scoring some wonderful goals and playing a big part in their unforgettable 2005 Champions League triumph. For several years he was one of the Premier League's best players. Benitez made the inexcusable decision to try and sign Gareth Barry as Alonso's replacement in the summer of 2008- the Spain international was very happy at Anfield at the time- and it clearly hurt him badly. Admittedly his form hadn't been at its best, but it was obvious that it was just a blip. When Real Madrid made a bid for him a year later, he was allowed to leave far too easily. It has been rumoured since that his relationship with Benitez soured after the Barry incident, and the manager didn't mind offloading him. In the five years since his £30m move back to Spain, Alonso has continued to be one of the world's finest midfielders, enjoying four superb years at Santiago Bernabeu, winning a World Cup and European Championship with Spain and, currently, enjoying a terrific start to life at Bayern Munich. Gareth Barry, meanwhile, is an average Premier League player at Everton. What was Benitez thinking? We'd love to know your top 10 in the comments section.Follow Henry on twitter: @HenryJackson87
