10 Players Who Successfully Played For Newcastle & Sunderland

6. David Kelly

NUFC: 1991 - 1993 (83 games, 39 goals) SAFC: 1995 - 1997 (40 games, 2 goals) Kelly is undoubtedly the champion of our promotion season and the man whose deadly prowess in front of goal fired us into the Premier League. Lest we forget he also wrote his name into Toon folklore with the goal that saved our bacon from relegation in 1992. Scoring 25 times in Division One and shouldering the majority of the striking burden until Andy Cole arrived late in the campaign with the duo forming a prolific partnership. But what Kelly didn't know was that he'd never wear a Black and White shirt in the top-flight and his last game for the Club saw him and Cole plunder a hat-trick each in a 7-1 demolition of Leicester City on the final day. But with Kevin Keegan lining up Peter Beardsley to partner Cole in the top-flight the Republic of Ireland international opted for a move to Wolves out of fear that he'd stagnate on the sidelines.
Two goal-laden years at Molineux followed before the one-time Magpies hero made a surprise switch to Sunderland and helped the Mackems to the Division One title in 1995. He remained a regular up front for Peter Reid during brief foray in the top-tier where he failed to register a single goal as we revelled in their relegation.
