10 Problems Only Newcastle United Fans Will Understand

7. Knowing Newcastle Might Not Get Into Europe Next Season Even If They Qualify

With Rangers almost back in the top flight of Scottish Football, Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has seen this as a good investment opportunity. With the naming rights to Ibrox (though not any more), a sizeable share in the public limited company, a seat on the board of directors and the installation of Newcastle's former director of football Derek Llambias it's safe to say he has quite an interest in the Glaswegian sleeping giant. On the 14th February 2012 Rangers FC were forced into administration and deducted 10 points. After the season finished, Rangers were relegated to the fourth tier of Scottish football, and since then they have won back to back promotions and are looking likely to return to the Scottish Premier League next season. Because of Ashley's financial interests in both clubs, UEFA has pointed out that the 2 clubs cannot play in European competition simultaneously and the deciding factor will be which club finishes highest in their respective league. The Scottish Premier League has never been thought of as a very competitive league, it would be easy for a well supported club like Rangers F.C to gain a top 2 finish next season, leaving the chances of Newcastle partaking in European competition next season very unlikely. On the bright side could this mean that Mike Ashley is actually planning on selling up at Newcastle and moving north of the border? Lets hope so.
