10 Ridiculous Arguments Against Sacking Alan Pardew

10. "His Win Record Makes Him A Good Manager€

A few days ago The Mag stated that Pardew€™s win record of 42.26% indicates that he is in fact a good manager, and that everyone should get off his case. But that is not the truth: for a start the stat is wrong, or at least not entirely the whole story, because some of those wins did not come in the Premier League and should not be classed as an indication of his top level ability. Looking back only at Pardew€™s Premier League record is far more interesting, and far more appropriate. The Mag writer€™s stats claim that with 42.26%, Pardew is currently the 9th best manager in the Premier League on his win record alone, but using his career win record to judge how good he is compared to only elite managers is ridiculous. In reality, Pardew€™s win record in the Premier League is in fact just 35%, having won 76 of the 215 he has managed at West Ham, Charlton and Newcastle. It is a cliche, but statistics can be used to €œprove€ anything: what matters here is that number of 35%, and not what it means compared to the rest of the Premier League€™s managers. What really matters is that a 35% win record in the Premier League would account for 13 wins, or 39 points, and combining that with Pardew€™s PL draw record at Newcastle (23% or 8 games), statistics would seem to prove that Newcastle will be looking at around 47 points by the end of the season. That might be good enough for survival, and indeed, judging by the final Premier League tables from each of Pardew€™s seasons at St. James€™ Park, would be enough for an average of 11th position, but is that really the mark of a €œgood€ manager? Shouldn€™t we be aiming for more?
