With his contract set to expire in the summer, Everton sold their Danish midfielder to Real Madrid for a fee of just £2.5m in January 2005. Though not quite fitting into the Galactico image, Gravesen had a reputation as a tough tackling, combative  midfielder and had international pedigree.

Though he did have short spells in the starting lineup, Gravesen was mainly deployed in a defensive midfield role, which he found uncomfortable to play in. His tough tackling attitude often landed him in hot water, with the Spanish media, fans and players all questioning his approach to the game.

The Dane was part of a training ground bust-up after a heavy challenge on Robinho, and then manager Fabio Capello had this to say about the former Everton man:

"The way he is, we won't have problems with him. He's just a little bit particular. I don't mess with him, he works well tactically. His behaviour is like this, and I don't like it, everything has to be done like he wants it to be done."

Gravesen was sold to Celtic for £2m after just one year in Madrid, and retired in 2008 after a loan spell back at Everton.

The Dane has since moved to Las Vegas, and has made a fortune in excess of £82m after investing in several projects after football.
