10 Things We Learned During Newcastle’s Summer Transfer Window

7. Mike Ashley Kept His Promise (Sort of)

Reportedly Mike Ashley had £34 million sitting in his bank account at the end of the last financial year so if we deduct that figure from the overall spending of £50 million then the Newcastle chairman's spending this summer isn't as impressive as once imagined. But, the Magpies' owner has undoubtedly made progress and his promise made at the end of last season has been kept. Five signings (and good signings at that) has provided new manager Steve McClaren with project and a healthy squad depth that not many Newcastle managers have had over the last few years. More importantly, aside from Remy Cabella (who was swiftly replaced by Florian Thauvin) none of the top players have left the club which represents an evident harmony within the camp and tribute should be given to the club for achieving that.
