3. Gabriel Gonzaga
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=199Ts4MZEiM The hype surrounding the 33-year-old Rio de Janeiro native all came from a head kick heard around the world. Similar to Randleman, Gonzaga's shock win came against Croatian kickboxer Mirko Cro Cop in a fight CC was expected to win. However, unlike Randleman, the way in which Gonzaga defeated Cro Cop and the implications surrounding it were far greater. The most surprising thing of all was that Gonzaga was known to be a submission expert whilst Cro Cop was known for his brutal high kicks, this is how it played out. So, the stage was set for a heavyweight title fight between fresh meat Gonzaga and old dog Randy Couture. Gabriel Gonzaga posed one of the biggest threats to Couture since the Chuck Liddell days, and many were skeptical about the Natural's chances against the Brazillian. Brimming with confidence, Nepao (Gonzaga's nickname) ended up losing in a fight of the night performance with Couture stopping the submission expert via TKO in the third stanza. Nepao then went on to face fellow Brazillian Fabricio Werdum, and was once again on the other end of a TKO, this time in the second. The immense hype that came from the brutal right head kick was derailed very shortly after. Gonzaga went on to compile a 3-3 record in the UFC after the Werdum match-up and was sent packing after losing three of his last four. After notching up a win in a regional promotion, Nepao was brought back for a short notice match-up which he won via decision, and he then bested veteran Ben Rothwell, also via submission, and seemed like a new man. Was this the old Gonzaga again? Unfortunately not. His last bout ended via a brutal KO at the hands (or should I say, elbows) of Travis Browne and Gonzaga has once again plummeted to gatekeeper status. He remains in the UFC, but any chances of a future title shot look bleak for the Brazillian submission specialist.
