10 Worst Man Utd Performances This Decade

7. Barcelona 3-1 Man United, 2011

The truth is that Manchester United were poor in both the 2009 final in Rome, and the clash two years later in Wembley, but not to the extent that Ferguson should have left his post and surrendered to the wonders of tiki-taka football. The truth is that while Man United huffed and puffed during the 2011 final, ultimately they were unable to get near the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi once again, as they cut through their defence like a knife. While Wayne Rooney levelled following Pedro€™s first-half goal for the Spaniards, second-half strikes from Messi and David Villa sent Barcelona on their way a third Champions League success in six seasons. For a final to produce statistics such as Barcelona dominating the possession with 68%, having 13 attempts on target to Man United€™s 1, and committing nine less fouls than their English counterparts, it was all a bit of a mismatch in the end. Unlike a number of the performances in this list, however, the Man United players needn€™t have hung their heads in shame afterwards - they were simply bested by a Catalonian masterclass, inspired by possibly the greatest player to ever kick a ball in vain.
