10 Worst World Cup Teams Ever
1. South Korea (1954)
We spoke earlier about Hungary enjoying a record-setting win over El Salvador, and they'd done the same many years earlier. In the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, lowly South Korea were making their debut appearance in the tournament and got drawn into Group 2 with Hungary, West Germany, and Turkey.
Back then, despite having four teams in each group, each team only actually played two games, so South Korea had to get results against Hungary and Turkey in order to escape the group. Their opening game against the Hungarians was an unmitigated disaster. Hungary were winning 4-0 by half-time and extended that lead to 9-0 by the time the final whistle blew.
The South Koreans fared little better against Turkey, who were also leading 4-0 by half-time and went on to score another few goals in the second half for a final score of 7-0. This meant that South Korea, despite only playing two games, managed to end up with a goal difference of -16, which is actually a World Cup record. South Korea also set or equaled records for most goals conceded overall, most goals conceded per game, and worst average goal difference per game.
