12 Newcastle Players Who Returned For A Second Spell On Tyneside
2. Joe Harvey
First Spell (As A Player, 1945-53): League Appearances: 224 League Goals: 12 Trophies Won: 1951 and 1952 FA Cup Second Spell (As Manager, 1962-75): Games Managed: 591 Wins: 224 Trophies Won: 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup What a legend Joe Harvey is at Newcastle United Football Club - and that's the reason he is the only entry on this list from outside of the Premier League era. The Doncaster-born half-back started his playing career at Wolverhampton Wanderers before moving to Bournemouth and Bradford City. He eventually arrived at St James' Park in the immediate aftermath of World War II in 1945, and made 224 league appearances for the Magpies, scoring 12 times. During one of the most-successful periods in Newcastle's history, Harvey helped the club to back-to-back FA Cup wins in 1951 and 1952 as a player. Then, having retired in 1953, Harvey returned to Newcastle nine years later as manager - and won 224 of 591 matches in charge between 1962 and 1975. As well as leading the club to promotion as Second Division winners in 1965, Harvey achieved what no Newcastle manager has done since - lifted a trophy. With the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup as manager to add to his FA Cup double as a player, Harvey's two spells at Newcastle were certainly extremely successful.
