12 Newcastle Successes (And 12 Failures) Scouted By Graham Carr

6. Mathieu Debuchy

Signed: 2013 (from Lille) Transfer Fee: £5.5 million Position: Right-Back Newcastle United Appearances: 46 (2013-14) Newcastle United Goals: 1 Current Club: Arsenal
Buy a defender for £5.5 million, sell him on for close to £15 million just 18 months down the line - now that is a cracking piece of business. Carr had long tracked Debuchy during his Lille days and the Magpies even tried to sign the Ligue 1 winner in the summer of 2012, but failed to stump up the cash - only to return for him just six months later. After 18 impressive months on Tyneside, Arsenal came calling and paid almost three times the fee the Magpies had given to Lille for the France international right-back - while Newcastle signed Daryl Janmaat for just £5 million. The shrewd nature of signing a player who proved to have such a high sell-on value helped highlight Carr's worth, but once again Debuchy certainly wasn't an unknown entity in France when Newcastle signed him. Signing Rating: 8
