If the stage was set for an unexpected fairy tale ending for Jonas Gutierrez, it was even more set for a final Newcastle combustion that would have seen them slump down to the Championship in disgrace.

With results all going against the Magpies for weeks (including Leicester's impossible resurgence) and the club haemorrhaging confidence and goals, it looked like a painful inevitability that relegation would be confirmed.

When your fans are already saying "maybe it's the best thing for us", you know a lot of them have already accepted relegation as a fact, even before the West Ham result.

But then, impossibly, Newcastle crawled out from their rock, ignored the massive tide of negativity from other fans around the country and played an inspiring 90 minutes that never looked scripted.
