20 Best FIFA World Cup Goals Ever
1. Diego Maradona - Argentina Vs England (1986)
The 1986 quarter final match between Argentina and England will be forever remembered for the outrageous manner with which Argentina took the lead through Diego Maradona's "Hand of God", the short-statured Napoli star punching the ball over England goalkeeper Peter Shilton.
It would take a lot to make that not even the major talking point of the game, but Maradona's second did just that.
No player has ever had such an immense impact on a single World Cup as Maradona did in 1986. Arguably the greatest footballer of the twentieth century performing at his peak, he almost single-handedly secured his country's second world championship.
Yes, the Hand of God incident showed the darker, more controversial side to Maradona's game, but four minutes later the Mexican crowd were treated to the beautiful side as well.
Maradona picked the ball up on the halfway line and headed toward the England goal once more. Gliding past attempted tackles from Terrys Butcher and Fenwick, he looked to lay it off to Jorge Valdano. But, with Valdano closely marked by Gary Stevens, Maradona just decided to go it alone. With a feint he left Shilton diving at his feet, taking the ball around him and slotting it into the empty net.
At the start of the new Millennium, Maradona's mazy run was declared "Goal Of The Century" by FIFA and, to be honest, it's an assessment that is hard to argue with.
