5 Best England Managers Of All Time

3. Terry Venables

Terry Venables Although Terry Venables had a very short reign as England manager, it was so successful that he had to make this list. Indeed, during his 23 games in charge England lost only once, and on penalties at that. After failing to qualify for the 1994 World Cup under Graham Taylor, England were at a low point. Despite not being active in management, Venables was selected by the FA to reignite some much needed passion to the side. However, off field accusations plagued Venables' reign and he decided that he would step down after Euro '96 to clear his name. As hosts of the tournament England flourished in front of their own fans. A 4-1 demolition of the Netherlands during the group stages left England in good spirits going into the knock-out stages. Once again though England would suffer heartache at the hands of the penalty shoot-out, and once again West Germany were the victors. The loss was a devastating blow for England, who had been playing some of their best football in years. Venables's team will be remembered for its attacking flair and style, but also for being the side that almost won England's first major title for 30 years.
