No really, hear me out. Despite the ill-feeling towards him that his (frankly excellent) derby performances may have warranted, Thomas Sorensen could be something of a saviour on Tyneside this December. His role at Stoke City has, understandably, been marginalised since Asmir Begovic cemented this position as the clubs number one. In fact, the last three seasons have seen him muster a solitary 12 games for the first team. Including a 5-1 tonking in what turned out to be Yohan Cabayes last game at St James Park. Whilst thats hardly a ringing endorsement its worth noting that Stoke were down to 9 men in that game and it could have conceded considerably more. Plus with Jack Butland, whos definitely the future of the entire England team apparently, back from his loan at Derby, Sorensens probably now Stokes third choice. Obviously his most famous moment if youre a black and white was his penalty save that won Sunderland a derby. Whilst thats not something any of us particularly want to recall, it does demonstrate his performances in big games, and with Arsenal, Chelsea, Southampton, Manchester United, a Capital One Cup quarter final and a derby coming up, a goalie who can handle pressure is almost as vital as the requisite number of hands they have.
