5 Reasons Newcastle United Won't Finish In The Top Four

2. They Are A Yo-yo Side

There's no getting away from it, Newcastle are an erratic club, both in results and league finishes. This season alone they have secured victories against Chelsea and Spurs, but in the same breath they have lost to Everton and before that to Hull City at home, not to mention their disappointing draw with West Ham. The only season this has not happened is when they finished fifth, but one thing that has littered most Newcastle seasons is their ability to play well against the top teams. But that's not even half the battle when considering that games against the top five or six teams only come to 12 matches a season. What about the other 26 fixtures in their campaign? So far the club have arrested this particular trend, with four victories in their last five games, which is one of the reasons that some are starting to sit up and take notice of them. Despite this, it is still unlikely that the side will finish close to the top four, but with games against Manchester United and Southampton coming up, they have the chance to lay down a marker for the rest of the season.
