The simple fact of the matter is that by his own admission, Owen should never have gone to the World Cup in 2006: though it was a knee injury that ended his World Cup, the foot injury that had ended his Newcastle season should have kept him away from the tournament altogether. Unfortunately for Newcastle fans, Owen simply loved England too much: he loved pulling on the shirt more than any of today€™s players do, and it was his excitement to play on the biggest stage that compelled him to ignore fitness concerns.
