8 Everton Players Who Won Trophies After Leaving Goodison
6. Steve McMahon
Steve McMahon is the first player on this to have featured for both Merseyside teams, with his success coming after leaving Goodison Park. McMahon started his career at Everton, playing for them as a teenager and being voted the Supporters Player of the Year in 1981. He left for Aston Villa after 4 seasons, and 100 league appearances. In 1985, McMahon joined Evertons rivals Liverpool for a fee of £350,000, becoming new manager Kenny Daglishs first signing at the club. He would play a crucial role in Liverpools success of that year, as they went on to win the league title and the FA Cup in the same year, and although he was left out of the side for the FA Cup final against former club Everton he featured on the bench and subsequently won a medal without getting on the pitch. He would remain a permanent fixture in the side for the next seven years, building a reputation as one of the best hard men in the game, although his hard tackling approach often led to scrutiny by the FA. By the time he left for Manchester City in 1992, McMahon had made 276 games and scored 50 goals for the club, with a plethora of trophies to his name, including three First Division titles, two FA Cups and four Charity Shields. Although he only featured 17 times for England, most of those came in international tournaments, including the 1988 European Championships in West Germany and the 1990 World Cup. Not a bad collection at all.
