9 Players Who Forced Moves To Man Utd

1. Dimitar Berbatov

If one ever needs an example of a player systematically burning their bridges over the course of one summer, all they have to do is take a look at Dimitar Berbatov€™s protracted and acrimonious exit from White Hart Lane in 2008. Having scored 46 goals in 102 games for Spurs, Manchester United were heavily linked with the player at the end of the 07/08 season, with Sir Alex Ferguson accused of unsettling the player. With Spurs having already sold one half of their talismanic striking partnership in Robbie Keane, they were hell-bent on keeping the mercurial Bulgarian. This, however, did not set will with the former Bayer Leverkusen man who subsequently refused to play in the club€™s opening two games of the season, in a desperate bid to force through the move.
''We had a player in Berbatov who had refused to play two games for us, having a detrimental effect on the dressing-room. We۪d known for a year that the player wanted out of this club. The reality is that in modern football the players have all the power. Nobody had ever heard of Dimitar Berbatov when we bought him. A year later with 10 days to go to the end of the window he tells us he wants to leave to go to Manchester United. I don۪t think he treated this club with the respect that we honestly deserved. We put him on the map. We offered him a new contract and he wasn۪t even interested in discussing it.۪۪ - Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, November 2008.
Following his petulant strops and tantrums, the Bulgarian was granted his wish and a £30 million transfer to Old Trafford was sealed on deadline day, despite some last-minute interest from newly-rich Manchester City. So that's a wrap - what do you think? Have there been any glaring omissions? As always, feel free to leave your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below.
