...you can see it now: Arsenal win a record-breaking 13th FA Cup and secure a top-four finish thereby securing Champions League football for a 21st consecutive season, and Wenger is handed a new contract.

This is the ideal scenario the Arsenal board would dearly love to see come May. The status and, more importantly, money from playing in Europe's top club football competition saves them from making a decision about the manager's future for another year at least. The beleaguered Frenchman has adopted a siege mentality recently: he wants to continue managing for another four years, whether at Arsenal or another club. You have to admire him for fronting up.

To be honest, given all that Wenger has achieved in revolutionising English football in terms of the beautiful football, dietary and fitness methods, it's rather sad to see him battered and harangued from all angles. But modern day football is ruthless; we'll never see the likes of Wenger and Alex Ferguson enjoying the kind of unwavering boardroom support hard-earned by them, support today's managers can only dream of.

Stability is admirable but it doesn't guarantee success, just look at the chaotic albeit successful regimes at Real Madrid and Chelsea. Perhaps the short-term pain of finishing outside the top four will be worth it for the long-term gain in getting a new manager in with a fresh perspective.

So who do you think could take over from Arsene Wenger, or are you adamant he should stay? Post your thoughts in the comments section below.

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
