Arsenal Transfers: 5 Reasons Why Arsene Wenger Still Failed This Summer

3. Missed Out On Key Targets

The capturing of Mesut Ozil may well have been a coup but like Manchester United's signing of Marouane Fellaini, it was the only one of a disappointing transfer window. Up until the Germany international arrived at Emirates Stadium, the Gunners attempted to sign Luis Suarez, and made two offers for the Uruguayan, of £30 million and £40 million and £1. Arsenal also wanted Cesc Fabregas back, and went in for Luiz Gustavo of Bayern Munich too. Other transfer targets, such as David Villa and Stevan Jovetic, also went elsewhere. In the end, the Gunner's only arrivals were Yaya Sanogo, Emiliano Viviano and Ozil. With the exception of the latter, that's hardly transfer business that sets the pulses racing. As well as a world-class goalkeeper and centre-half, Wenger also needed a defensive midfielder and a new striker, and got neither of these.
