Arsenal Transfers: 5 Strikers Arsene Wenger Could Sign In January

2. Christian Benteke

Christian Benteke was one of the signings of the season last year, joining Aston Villa from Genk for around £7 million. Given the Belgian's stunning form last season it was expected that Villa's talisman would leave the club this summer. Indeed, Benteke handed in a transfer request. However, no club met the £25 million valuation and the Belgian later withdrew his request and signed a new deal with the club. It is perhaps surprising that no clubs came in for Benteke. In his first year in the Premier League, the Belgian scored 19 league goals in 34 games. Such were the level of his performances that Benteke was shortlisted for the PFA Young Player of the Year Award. The striker's impressive frame and physique makes it easy to forget that he is still only 22. The opportunity to mould and grow Benteke must be an attractive proposition for Wenger, who has an outstanding track record of developing young talent. Arsenal's decision not to move for the starlet in the summer may have been down to the fact they were focusing on other targets, namely Luis Suarez. However, the Belgian's scintillating start to the season may see Wenger turn his attention to Aston Villa's prized asset.
