Arsenal Transfers: 6 Players Arsene Wenger Needs To Sell This Summer

4. Gervinho

Gervinho When Arsenal were the best team in England (Premier League winners 1997-98, 2001-02, 2003-04) it coincided with France being a top international country (1998 World Cup winners and Euro 2000 winners). In that 1998 World Cup winning squad, both Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit were Arsenal players, whilst Robert Pirès and Thierry Henry would later sign for Arsenal. In 2000, Sylvain Wiltord would later to sign for Arsenal and Nicolas Anelka was a former Gunner. My point is, Wenger was bringing in top players from a top nation 10 or so years ago. Today, still looking for talent in France, one player the Arsenal boss brought in in 2011 from Lille OSC was Gervinho. Whilst the Ivorian looked lively down the wing when he first arrived, it was clear to see there was a greediness about him inside the penalty area, a lack of finishing or final ball. Gervinho has 9 goals in 46 Premier League matches in two seasons for Arsenal and a further 8 assists. In comparison, Lukas Podolski scored 11 goals and 9 assists in 33 Premier League appearances last season, mainly as a left forward, and Theo Walcott recorded 14 goals and 10 appearances in 32 Premier League appearances, mainly from the right wing. With better options already in the first team and with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ryo Miyaichi and Serge Gnabry all ready to break through €“ give them a chance whilst trying to offload Gervinho.
