Gilberto Silva joined Arsenal in 2002 on the back of an impressive World Cup campaign, and immediately looked the part. The Brazilian was exactly what Arsenal needed, and he provided the screening the back four needed when under threat. Known for his excellent positional play and reading of the game, his best attribute was perhaps that he kept things simple.

After Arsenal

After six years in North London, Gilberto Silva eventually moved on to play for Panathinaikos of Greece. He then headed back to his native Brazil, playing for both Gremio and Atletico Mineiro before hanging up his boots in 2013.

Gilberto is now a patron of the charity 'The Street League', which operates in the UK. The charity organises football matches and events for homeless people, refugees and asylum seekers. The Brazilian also has a keen interest in music, and plays both the guitar and the mandolin in his spare time.
