Bayer Leverkusen
Bernd Leno: Beaten five times, but none of the dodgy keeping he displayed for the Under-21s this summer. Acrobatic save kept out Jones. 5/10. Giulio Donati: Caught upfield and too attack-minded for this assignment. Gave the ball away in a position he never should have been in for the fourth goal. 4/10. Emir Spahic: Headed Rooney free kick past own keeper to make it 2-0. Bosnian was under big pressure from Chris Smalling. Lucky to see second half mistake not punished by Nani. Expected better from an experienced centre back. 3/10. Omer Toprak: Cleared dangerous Smalling delivery, but woeful defending at set pieces. Given little protection by midfield in front of him. 3/10. Emre Can: Playing out position and it showed throughout, left Valencia for opening goal as sucked into the centre. Caught out of position because he does not know how to play this one. Definition of a square peg in a round hole. 2.5/10. Stefan Reinartz: Lost possession at start of move that led to Valencia goal, and this set the tone for his evening. Hit post with header from a corner. Subbed. 3/10. Lars Bender: German international let down rather badly by the rest of his teammates here. Needed to do more defensively, but had no answers to stop Rooney and Kagawa. 3.5/10. Simon Rolfes: Leverkusen captain drifted in and out of this one. 4/10. Gonzalo Castro: Anonymous. 3/10. Stefan Kiessling: Headed near post corner over. Ferdinand struggled with him at times, but threat was never consistent. 4.5/10. Son Heung-Min: Industrious early on, but outshined by fellow Far Eastern player Kagawa. Subbed. 5/10. Subs: Jens Hegeler: Only got 20 minutes. Rating N/A. Eren Derdyiok: Came off the bench and only player to properly test De Gea with deflected effort at the death. 5/10. Click next for the Man United player ratings.
