After all, the versatile centre-half only made 14 Premier League appearances for Arsenal last term after losing his place to Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker. However, persistent rumours link the Belgian with a move to Manchester United this summer while Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has even admitted the defender might leave Emirates Stadium this month. A transfer to United would see Vermaelen's playing time shoot right up and he would almost certainly be a regular starter under Louis van Gaal, who has a distinct lack of defensive options at Old Trafford. That then would make Vermaelen an absolute steal at just £5 million - which is just about as cheap as defenders get before you begin to drift into the more obscure names at that price.
