The arrival of Jose Mourinho at Chelsea in 2004 triggered an immediate impact: they won the Premier League title, the League Cup and had an impressive run in the Champions League, earning the team many plaudits. The 2004/05 season was Lampards finest yet: he netted an incredible 19 goals in all competitions and formed a formidable partnership with Claude Makelele at the heart of the Chelsea midfield. This meant there was no argument when he beat team mate, John Terry, to the Football Writers Association player of the year. Becoming the second Chelsea player to win the award, after Gianfranco Zola had won in 1997. This was a great breakthrough for Lampard as previously he had always fallen short: that same year he was second place in the previous years FWA Player of the Year, and had finished second in PFA player Player Of The Year awards two year running. Later that year the acknowledgments of his performances kept on coming, as Lampard came second in both the Balon dOr and FIFA World Player of the Year. This showed that Lampard was starting to gain recognition all over the world, and this was just the start for the midfielder.
