Liverpool's 10 Greatest Champions League Victories

2. Liverpool 3-1 Olympiakos (2004)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9-P2UF9JIg It's 10 years to the day (if you're reading this on 8th December 2014) since that unbelievable night against Olympiakos, and if Liverpool can produce something similar against Basel on Tuesday, it will be a sight to behold. Back in 2004, Liverpool knew that they either had to defeat the Greek side 1-0 at Anfield, or beat them by two clear goals, in order to qualify for the knockout stages. It was a night that had incredible amounts of drama, and it further enhanced Gerrard's reputation as one of the most influential players in Europe at the time. Having missed a few first-half chances, the Reds were dealt a hammer blow when Brazilian legend Rivaldo curled a free-kick through the wall and into the back of the Kop net. The hosts now needed three second-half goals to go through. They scored almost immediately after the break, as Harry Kewell crossed for Florent Sinama Pongolle to stab home from close-range. With nine minutes remaining, another substitute, Neil Mellor, lashed home to give his side a chance of late glory. The stage was set for Gerrard to produce one of his most iconic moments in a Liverpool shirt. Mellor's deft header found the skipper 30 yards from goal, and he smashed an unstoppable half-volley into the corner of the net. It was complete carnage inside Anfield, and having held on for the 3-1 win, the rest, as they say, is history.
