Louis van Gaal Man Utd Press Conference - 5 Things We Learned
2. He Wants To Win The League
Despite refusing to put any king of a time frame on how long it will take him to turn Manchester United around and re-establish them as a dominant club in England, he did admit that his ambition is "to finish first, not fourth" during his stay at Old Trafford. When asked what would he would consider success during his first season, van Gaal replied: "I don't know. First of all I have to see how the players perform my philosophy and how quickly they pick it up.
"I haven't worked with most of them so we have to wait and see it's very important that there is a click between the players and the manager. For me the challenge is first and not fourth, but when you analyse it it's about the click."
That was the second time during his press conference that van Gaal referred to "a click" between his players, and it could well be that success in his first season is as much up to the starting XI as it is the Dutchman. Van Gaal can only do so much from the sidelines - it is up to the players on the pitch to exert his influence and apply his philosophy.
