Man Utd: 10 Stats That Prove Moyes Is Getting It All Wrong

10. Why Does Ferdinand Play?

A damning stat for the ageing defender if ever there was one, but United have won just two of the seven games in which Rio Ferdinand has featured, compared to eight of the thirteen he hasn't played in. That is even more stark a revelation when you consider the win percentages involved: 29% with and 62% without. In fact, the evidence is damning from all angles regarding Ferdinand, regardless of how important he has been in the past for United. The Red Devils have so far managed to score 1.4 goals a game with Ferdinand in the side, compared to 1.8 without him, and have conceded an average of 1.4 goals per game with him in the squad, and 1.1 without him. So the question remains, besides experience, which of course has a less tangible impact on a team's fortunes than say goals or interceptions, what exactly does Ferdinand actually bring to the United team anymore? He seems detrimental in both starting attacks and halting them and the 29% win rate surely must condemn the 35-year old to the bench for the rest of the season.
