2. Michael Owen

We all know about Michael Owen; he burst onto the scene at Liverpool, and led the England attack for years as he found it harder to miss goals rather than score them. His CV also includes Real Madrid and Newcastle where he, when fit, was regularly amongst the goals; as Owen has guaranteed throughout his career. When he was released by Newcastle United at the end of his contract, and at the time of their relegation, he was being linked with moves to Aston Villa and Stoke. No one saw a move to Manchester United coming in a million years, but Sir Alex saw something lacking in his own squad that he thought Owen could add: goals. With little attacking threat off the bench for Ferguson to choose from, Owen was an alternative with an eye for goal and a truly reliable professional. His career at Man Utd was, however, marred by injury, and mixes that with the emergence of strikers like Chicharito and Danny Welbeck; his services were eventually no longer seen to be needed. So Michael Owen left for Stoke, but with a last-ditch goal in a fiercely fought 4-3 win over Man City, having cemented a place in the heart of many of the United faithful.
