Man Utd Transfers: 10 Deals Van Gaal Still Needs To Complete

3. Another Centre-Half

Signing Rojo was a big step-forward for Van Gaal's squad, but to play the system he so clearly wants to play, the Dutchman needs more available options. Heading into the season with just three first team options for three starting berths was always a mistake, and though Tyler Blackett coped well on his debut, he is not yet a long-term covering solution. And that's not the only issue: there are still questions over Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling as a Top Four back line at all, and even with Rojo it still feels like United need another world class defender. Quite where that player will come from remains to be seen, though if United can beat Arsenal to Toby Alderweireld - and convince him to step out of the Champions League for a season - that would be a great option. The issue really is that the market for centre-halfs is all too tight, and having missed out on Thomas Vermaelen already, Van Gaal will be all too aware of that.
