Striker 2: Diego Forlan
It seems unthinkable that Diego Forlan would be on this list of worst ever Manchester United players in the Premier League. However, on the flip side it could be said that when he left the club in 2004, if you were to say to anyone he would one day win the European Golden Boot Award, they would have told you to lay off those chunky homemade cigarettes. But Forlan, who has recently terrorised defenses across Spain and Brazil and has become Uruguay's second highest ever goalscorer, it was his time at United that proved to be the darkest spell in his career. Forlan signed for United after a successful time at Independiente, and with a large following in Europe after his prized signature, that came at
a price of £7 million. The Red Devils beat the opposition to the punch as they so often do, and he joined a team that had just lost a prize partnership in Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke. The arrival of Forlan and Ruud Van Nistelrooy was deemed as the way to provide the same amount of goals, but unfortunately only one was able to deliver, and it was not Forlan. Forlan didn't score for the first eight months of his time at the club, although in fairness to him he was unlikely to get many chances in the close season. When he did score famously against Southampton, he was so unaccustomed to the feeling that he was unable to get his shirt back on after celebrating. He was unable to score in the prolific manner as Van Nistelrooy, Solskjaer, Saha or even midfielders like Giggs and Scholes. Simply put, as his duty to the club was essentially to score goals, it is a duty at which he failed, and that is the reason why he is a necessary component of this regrettable line-up. So that's my choices for the worst eleven. What are yours? Feel free to comment!
