When Alan Pardew left for Crystal Palace at the turn of the year, Newcastle were in ninth place on 26 points after 19 games. They were comfortably on course for a mid-table finish and were on a reasonable run of form. However, that form capitulated under John Carver during 2015 - and the Magpies instead finished 15th, on just 39 points.
