Newcastle 3-4 Portland Timbers 2 – NUFC Match Ratings

8. Georginio Wijnaldum (Replaced By Daryl Janmaat) - 5/10

More minutes with his new teammates and a goal to boot. That was your lot from Newcastle's new £14.5 million man who didn't really offer too much on his full debut for the club. United's formation was a bit up in the air in the first-half and this certainly seemed to affect the Dutchman's performance. He looked lost at times as he seemed to be unsure whether he was meant to be playing as one of the two in a 4-2-3-1, one of the more advanced midfielders in that same system, or one of a three in a 4-3-3... He took his goal well as he clinically slotted a pull-back from Aarons into the side-netting, but there is certainly more to come from Gini as he gets to know his teammates, and this double six formation Steve McClaren is going to play next season.

Daryl Janmaat - 4/10

Brought on to shore up the United defence in the second-half, which he did to a certain extent as The Magpies only conceded once compared to the three they shipped in the first 45... However he did look very nervy in the centre of defence alongside Satka, which made for a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes on the ball from last year's player of the season. Let's hope Mike Ashley ratifies enough moves for central-defensive targets which means Daryl doesn't need to play there too many times next season.
