Newcastle Injury Update: Anita Fit To Play While Dummett And Cabella Make Progress

Little Vurnon is hard as nails.

Newcastle United assistant coach, Paul Simpson has stated that Paul Dummett and Remy Cabella could be back to fitness in the next couple of weeks and confirmed that Vurnon Anita is fit to play against Swansea this weekend.

The pair have been injured since the beginning of pre-season and are not expected to play against Swansea City on Saturday or against Manchester United the following week.

Cabella, has been suffering with a thigh injury and Dummett has a hamstring problem that reoccurred while the defender was on international duty with Wales.

Both players are crucial to the Magpies squad and their first-team experience gives Steve McClaren further options to explore.

Speaking to nufcTV, Simpson provided an update on both players' fitness:

He said:

"Paul Dummett has been doing a bit of work and then he had a little bit of a setback, so we went and had him re-scanned.

"It came back clear so he's been back out (on Wednesday) doing the work. He's getting to a decent level, he's just feeling a little bit of discomfort, but we're hoping we can get over that very soon and get him involved in one of the under-21 games.

"He was pencilled in to be involved on Monday against Blackburn (kick-off 7pm at Whitley Park) but it now seems as though that's going to be too early so it may be the following week away at Brighton. We're just looking all the time with him.

"Remy Cabella has been out working; he's done five or six days out on the grass, doing football work, working with the rehab fellas. We're hoping that maybe by the end of this week or the beginning of next week, he may be able to join in with the rest of the group to start building him up."

Simpson also confirmed that Vurnon Anita has trained this week despite being stretchered off after 60 minutes during the Magpies' clash against Southampton on the opening day of the season.

He added:

"He's had a little bit of grief about that, because it's been a proper miraculous recovery - stretchered off on Sunday and fit to train on Wednesday.

"But it was a real concern at the time because he took a real heavy, awkward landing in his fall. I'm going to have to give credit to the medical team - they've laid their magic hands on him and he's made a really good recovery.

"He joined in training (on Wednesday), hopefully there'll be no reaction from that, and we'll have a clean bill of health going into the Swansea fixture."
