Newcastle Transfers: 10 Worst Ever Premier League Signings

9. Stephane Guivarc'h

From: Auxerre Fee: £3.5 million (Source: The Independent) World Cup winner Guivarc'h was signed prior to the World Cup in 1998, giving Newcastle fans a chance to watch their new striker in action at the top stage. And what a treat it was as midfielders Zinedine Zidane and Emmanuel Petit scored the goals that made France winners on their home soil. Guivarc'h remains the only number 9 in history not to have scored a goal for a side that went on to win the tournament. He did score on his home debut against Liverpool though, mis-hitting his shot past Brad Friedel who to this day still probably regards that as his worst moment in football, Liverpool won 4-1. Manager Dalglish was soon shown the door after signing Guivarc'h and the €œstriker€ soon followed, taking his talents to Scotland with Rangers, scoring an impressive 5 goals in 14 games, including a brace on his debut in a 7-0 victory over St. Johnstone. He's a World Cup Winner remember. Poor Stephane simply shouldn't have left France, where his goalscoring record wasn't actually too bad - and his career record is a goal every two games which is better than Wayne Rooney, proving once again, that stats aren't everything.
