Newcastle Transfers: 3 Things The Magpies Need (And 1 They Definitely Don't)

3. A Defender

While James Perch could be a serviceable gap filler across the back line, it seems that cover for the right back spot is more pressing now that Danny Simpson has joined Queens Park Rangers. A suitable, solid squad player should be brought in. Preferably a player on the young side who will eventually push Debuchy for the starting job. We've been linked with an awful lot of central defenders over the last few weeks and if we let Mike Williamson go, then that's totally fine. However, at the moment it looks like Colo is staying put and we therefore have three international central defenders and only two spots. Adding another high-quality central defender and a little competition for a place is always good, but it could stir unrest amongst the lads we already have under contract, and that's never a good thing. Therefore if a new central defender is going to be brought in, I think it should be one for the development team, and Kurt Zouma looks like a perfect fit. Back to our hole at right back. It's a little disconcerting that we haven't really been linked with more defenders on the right side. In fact there haven't really been any. I for one am not excited about seeing Gutierrez slide into the left back position so that we can put Santon on the right if Debuchy were to be hurt again. Are you? Didn't think so. I'd love to say that we've been linked with some quality right backs, but the truth is we haven't. With the lack of right backs on the move, perhaps we'll have to look to the Championship or put our faith in Carr digging up some gold on the continent. Now that we've talked about what we need, something worth mentioning is WE DO NOT NEED ANY MORE MIDFIELDERS...
