Newcastle Transfers: 7 Centre-Backs Pardew Must Consider Signing

2. Michael Dawson

Current Club: Tottenham Hostpur Though he has been linked with Sunderland for the past two years, if Tottenham captain Michael Dawson does indeed become available, Newcastle should consider bringing him to Tyneside from under Gus Poyet's nose. The centre-half has masses of experience, and has played a key - and undervalued - role in Spurs' back line since signing from Nottm Forest. His passing success would also redress Newcastle's long-ball tactics, which would allow key attacking players like Remy Cabella to have more time on the ball rather than watch them sail over his head. Yes he would be short-term, but with Lascelles coming in, Newcastle don't necessarily even need a long-term option. The Concerns Dawson is 30 and so well outside the apparently accepted age boundaries, and thus there would be limited sell-on value. So regardless of how well he might slot into the team, and change the passing game from the back, he's probably too old and too expensive to fit the model.
