Newcastle vs Sunderland: 5 Greatest Ever Premier League Tyne & Wear Derbies

3. Newcastle 3-2 Sunderland 23rd October 2005

Emre One of the more dramatic Tyne and Wear derbies saw Newcastle take and surrender the lead on several occasions. The game sparked in to life on 34 minutes when Shola Ameobi headed in an Emre corner to give Newcastle the lead, his aerial threat a constant problem for Sunderland. Just a minute later though, Sunderland were level, Lawrence finishing fantastically low in to the bottom right hand corner. Ameobi struck again just two minutes later when he met N€™Zogbia€™s cross, however the deflection on it later led it to be given as Caldwell own goal. However this time the lead lasted just four minutes when Elliot put a 25 yard curler in to the top left had corner to make it 2-2. The goals then dried up with no more coming till the 63rd minute, probably the best of the lot. Emre stood over a free kick about 25 yards out he struck it perfectly left footed over the wall and low off the post in to the goal. St James€™ park went crazy, the players jumped on to manager Graeme Souness and even the injured watching Michael Owen celebrated! Sunderland pressed and Elliot hit the crossbar while Taylor also had to clear from the Newcastle goal line to deny Sunderland's Gray, but Newcastle held on for a great victory.
